Magha Puja, also known as Makha Bucha, is an important Buddhist festival observed in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar. It occurs every year on the full moon day of the month of Magha. This festival commemorates the anniversary of four significant events that took place at Veluvana Bamboo Grove, where 1,250 arhats gathered to hear the Buddha’s teachings without prior arrangement. During Magha Puja, Buddhists engage in merit-making activities, visiting temples for special observances, and participating in candlelight processions. In some locations, large pagoda festivals are organized, with Myanmar’s Shwedagon Pagoda hosting the largest such event. The day emphasizes the three principles of Buddhism: to cease from all evil, to do what is good, and to cleanse one’s mind.
