Beer Day is observed in Iceland every March 1, celebrating the end of beer prohibition, which lasted until 1989. The prohibition began in 1908, when Icelanders voted in a referendum to ban beer and other spirits, with the ban coming into effect in 1915. Although the ban was partially lifted in 1921 and further in 1935, strong beer remained illegal due to concerns from the temperance lobby. The prohibition of strong beer was finally lifted in 1989, allowing Icelanders to legally purchase it in pubs and stores. To commemorate this occasion, many beer enthusiasts participate in pub crawls and festivities on Beer Day, marking a significant cultural event in Iceland's history.
