Székely Freedom Day (Ziua Libertății Secuilor) is observed in Romania, particularly in the Székely Land, which includes Covasna, Harghita, and Mureș Counties. Celebrated every March 10, the day commemorates the execution of three Hungarian revolutionaries in Târgu Mureș in 1854, following their arrest by Austrian authorities. Established by the Szekler National Council in 2012, the day is marked by peaceful ceremonies at the Marosvasarhely Szekely Martyrs memorial and protests advocating for the autonomy of the Székely Land. The Székelys, a subgroup of the Hungarian minority in Romania, have a complex history that includes claims of descent from the Huns and a significant role in Transylvania's medieval political landscape. While the day aims to honor their heritage, it has also seen clashes between protesters and authorities during demonstrations. In 2020, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Szekler National Council focused on collecting signatures for Szekler autonomy instead of holding public protests.
