National Theater Day is observed in Azerbaijan every March 10, celebrating the significance of theater in the country’s cultural life. Established by President Ilham Aliyev in 2013, this official cultural and professional observance commemorates the birthday of Azerbaijani theater, marked by the premiere of Mirza Fatali Akhundov's play “The Adventure of the Lankaran Khanate’s Vizier” in Baku on March 10, 1873. The day is celebrated with various activities, including conferences, round table discussions, and premieres of new plays. The modern form of Azerbaijani theater emerged in the late 19th century, and today there are 26 state theaters in the country, reflecting the growth of theatrical arts since Akhundov's time. National Theater Day serves to honor the contributions of theater to Azerbaijani literature and culture.
