Hōnen Matsuri is an annual fertility festival celebrated in Japan on March 15. The festival, which means "prosperous year," honors the blessings of a bountiful harvest and various forms of fertility and prosperity. The most notable celebration occurs in Komaki, a city located just north of Nagoya. The festivities commence at 10 a.m., with the main event—a phallic procession featuring a 2.5-meter long wooden phallus—taking place around 2 p.m. This procession travels from Kumano Sha in odd-numbered years or Shinmei Sha in even-numbered years to Tagata Jinja, accompanied by Shinto priests who offer prayers and blessings. Additional activities include a parade of participants in ceremonial clothing, music played by Shinto priests, and the consumption of holiday foods and sake, along with the purchase of phallus-shaped souvenirs symbolizing fertility. The celebration concludes around 4:30 p.m.
