Latvian Legion Day, also known as the Remembrance Day of the Latvian Legionnaires, is observed in Latvia every March 16. This day honors the soldiers of the Latvian Legion, a unit of the Waffen-SS during World War II, commemorating the anniversary of their first battle against the Soviet Army in 1944. Officially declared a remembrance day in 1998, it was later abolished as an official commemoration by the Latvian government due to objections from the European Union, as the Legion was part of a Nazi formation. Despite this, Latvian nationalist organizations continue to observe the day unofficially, organizing memorial services, processions, and wreath-laying ceremonies. Conversely, antifascist organizations hold demonstrations against the observance, reflecting the controversy surrounding the commemoration.
