Marien Ngouabi Day is observed in the Republic of the Congo on March 18 each year. This holiday commemorates Marien Ngouabi, who served as the military president of the Republic from 1969 until his assassination on March 18, 1977. Ngouabi came to power following his release from arrest, which sparked military discontent, leading to the formation of the National Revolutionary Council (NRC) that curtailed the powers of the then-political leader, Massamba-Débat. Although his policies faced criticism, Ngouabi's rule was marked by a failed coup attempt in 1972. The day is significant as it marks the anniversary of his assassination by an alleged suicide commando, with those involved in the plot, including ex-president Massamba-Débat, facing trial and execution.
