Sheikh Al Maarouf Day is observed in the Comoros every March 18 to honor Said Muhammad bin Sheikh Ahmed, known as Al Maarouf, for his significant contribution to the introduction of the Shadhili tariqa, a Sufi order of Sunni Islam, on the island of Grande Comore. This public holiday reflects the country's predominant Sunni Islamic faith, which is practiced by 98% of the population. The day commemorates Al Maarouf's efforts during the colonial era when he was exiled by Said Ali bin Said Omar for his religious activities. Although the Shadhili tariqa is not the only Sufi order in the Comoros, Al Maarouf's influence is particularly recognized due to his role in establishing this tradition. The holiday highlights the historical significance of Islam in the Comoros, where the study of Islamic texts is mandatory in public schools.
