Air Force Day in Sri Lanka is observed every March 2 to commemorate the establishment of the Royal Ceylon Air Force, now known as the Sri Lanka Air Force, in 1951. This day marks the anniversary of the air force's creation, which occurred three years after the country's independence. Initially, the Royal Ceylon Air Force had no aircraft, with the first de Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk arriving months later for training purposes. In 1972, the organization was renamed to reflect the country's transition to a republic. The Sri Lanka Air Force plays a significant role, especially noted during the Sri Lankan Civil War in the 1980s, and currently consists of approximately 28,700 active personnel operating over 160 aircraft. Although it is not a public holiday, Air Force Day is celebrated with official speeches, solemn ceremonies, air shows, and various relevant activities.
