Global Surveyors’ Day is observed worldwide every March 21 to recognize the contributions of surveyors, one of the oldest professions in human history. The day was first celebrated in 2018 during the Land and Poverty Conference at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, DC, following a proposal made in 2008 and the signing of the Budapest Declaration in 2013 by representatives of the Council of European Geodetic Surveyors and the National Society of Professional Surveyors. The celebration includes various events organized by professional organizations, and one tradition is the selection of the Surveyor of the Year from notable historical figures in surveying and cartography, such as Geradus Mercator and Galileo Galilei. Global Surveyors’ Day aims to highlight the importance of surveying in fields like construction, mapping, and land ownership, reflecting its integral role in societal development.
