March 22: Day of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (Laos)

The Day of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party is observed in Laos every March 22, commemorating the anniversary of the founding of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP), which has governed the country since 1975. The LPRP originated from the Indochinese Communist Party established in 1930, with a small Lao section formed in 1936 that later evolved into the Pathet Lao resistance movement. On March 22, 1955, the Lao People's Party was officially proclaimed, operating clandestinely through the Pathet Lao until it renamed itself the LPRP in 1972. The party became the ruling entity in Laos after the Pathet Lao overthrew the royal government in 1975. While the Day of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party is not a public holiday, it remains a significant milestone in the country’s history, marking the establishment of a single-party state where the majority of the National Assembly members belong to the LPRP. The party's key policy-making bodies include the Politburo, Secretariat, and Central Committee.
