World Doula Day is observed worldwide every March 22, marking the beginning of World Doula Week. This day celebrates the contributions of doulas, who are trained professionals providing support to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. The concept of doula support dates back to prehistoric times, but the modern profession emerged in the 1960s, with the term "doula" coined by American medical anthropologist Dana Raphael. The inaugural World Doula Day was established in 2011 by Ruti Karni Horowitzh in collaboration with CAPPA Israel, chosen for its proximity to the vernal equinox, symbolizing fertility. Activities during this week include professional events for doulas to share experiences and ideas, as well as initiatives aimed at educating the public about the benefits of doula care, which is associated with improved birth outcomes and increased parental confidence.
