National Tree Day is observed in Sint Maarten every March 22. This holiday was officially declared by governmental decree in 2008 and is celebrated in the Dutch part of the island, which comprises 40% of the territory, while the remaining 60% is the French overseas collectivity of Saint Martin. On this day, community centers, schools, police stations, and local administration participate in tree planting events aimed at protecting the native forests and preventing soil erosion. Participants plant hundreds of trees, including native fruit trees, flamboyants, shade trees, and various flowering trees, enhancing the island's beauty. The tropical climate, characterized by rainy and dry seasons, supports the growth of both native and exotic trees, which are often included in the planting activities.
