World Kabaddi Day is observed worldwide every March 24 to celebrate the foundation of World Kabaddi, an organization established to promote the sport globally. Kabaddi, a traditional contact team sport resembling tag, involves two teams of seven players each, where a raider attempts to tag opponents while chanting "kabaddi" on a single breath. The sport has ancient origins, believed to date back to the Vedic age, and has historical references in Hindu texts, including the Mahabharata. Although kabaddi has been popular in the Indian subcontinent, particularly in India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh, it gained international recognition when it was played as a demonstration sport at the First Asian Games in 1951. World Kabaddi Day is marked by competitions, demonstrations, and exhibition matches to promote kabaddi, uniting national associations from over fifty countries under the organization's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
