Established in 2017, this holiday commemorates the independence of Bessarabia from the Russian Empire and its union with Romania, which took place on March 27, 1918. The observance is marked by cultural, artistic, and scientific events organized by state and local authorities, NGOs, and cultural institutions in Romania and abroad. The national flag of Romania is prominently displayed throughout the country during the celebrations. The initiative to create this holiday was led by Eugen Tomac, a deputy of the People’s Movement Party, and it received official recognition from President Klaus Iohannis. While some political parties in Moldova support a similar observance, others oppose it, leading to unofficial celebrations among Moldovans who favor reunification with Romania.
