March 27: Performing Arts Day (Iran)

Performing Arts Day, also known as Theatre Day, is observed in Iran every March 27, coinciding with World Theatre Day. This cultural holiday was initiated by the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution, established by Ayatollah Khomeini, and was first celebrated in 2017. The date was chosen to align with an international observance started in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute. Iranian theatre has ancient roots, with traditional forms including Naqqāli (storytelling), Ta’zieh (theatre inspired by Shia martyrs), Kheimeh Shab Bazi (puppetry), and Siah-Bazi (political comedy). Since the Iranian Revolution of 1979, theatre performances must adhere to the standards set by the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution, resulting in a more subdued artistic expression.
