March 29: Youth Day

Youth Day is observed in Taiwan every March 29 to commemorate the victims of the Second Guangzhou uprising, also known as the Yellow Flower Mound revolt. This uprising, which took place in April 1911, was led by revolutionary leader Huang Xing and primarily involved young rebels from various social backgrounds. Despite being outnumbered, these young individuals fought bravely but suffered a disastrous defeat, resulting in the identification of only 72 bodies, referred to as the 72 martyrs, who were buried in a mass grave on the Yellow Flower Mound. The date of Youth Day was originally aligned with the People's Republic of China's May Fourth Movement but was changed to March 29 in 1954. The observance serves as a memorial to honor the sacrifices made by these young revolutionaries in their struggle against the Qing Dynasty.
