Kalpak Day, also known as Ak Kalpak Day, is observed in Kyrgyzstan every March 5 to celebrate the kalpak, the national headdress of the Kyrgyz people. This holiday was first celebrated in 2011 and gained official status in 2016, initiated by filmmaker Yrysbek Jabirov to preserve the kalpak's significance as a national symbol. The kalpak, typically made of white felt, symbolizes the snow-capped peaks of the Tian Shan Mountains and is adorned with various embroidery patterns. It is traditionally worn by men, with different color trimmings indicating the wearer's age. In rural areas, the kalpak serves as a practical everyday hat, while in urban settings, it is reserved for special occasions. The kalpak is treated with great respect in Kyrgyz culture, and it is considered improper to throw or damage it.
