The Martyrdom of Imam Hasan al-Askari is observed in Iran on the 8th day of the month of Rabi al-awwal. This observance honors the 11th Imam of Shia Islam, who was born in 846 and became known as al-Askari due to his residence in the garrison town of Samarra. His life was marked by house arrest imposed by the caliph al-Mutawakkil to limit his influence on Shia Muslims. Imam al-Askari dedicated his time to studying the Quran and Sharia while under confinement. He was poisoned on the orders of the caliph al-Mu’tamid at the young age of 27 or 28. The day commemorates his martyrdom and is significant within the Shia community, reflecting on his legacy and contributions to Islamic teachings.
