Kazakhstan People's Unity Day is observed in Kazakhstan every May 1. This holiday replaced International Workers' Day, which was celebrated during the Soviet era with marches, parades, and performances. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan renamed the holiday to emphasize unity among its diverse population, which includes around 150 ethnic groups such as Kazakhs, Russians, Uzbeks, and others. The decree to establish Kazakhstan People's Unity Day was signed in 1995, with the first official celebration occurring in 1996. The day focuses on promoting mutual understanding and cultural dialogue among the various ethnic communities. A notable highlight of the celebration is an ethno-cultural exhibition held in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.
