May 1: Physicians’ Day (Canada)

National Physicians’ Day is observed in Canada every May 1 to honor the dedication of physicians who work tirelessly to care for others and maintain public health. This day was established by the Canadian Medical Association to commemorate the birthday of Emily Stowe, the first female physician to practice in Canada. As of 2022, there were over 96,020 physicians in Canada, with a significant majority practicing in urban areas. The day recognizes the vital role physicians play in the healthcare system and promotes a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion within medicine. Although a bill to designate May 1 as National Physicians’ Day at the federal level was introduced in 2018, it did not pass before the subsequent federal election. Nonetheless, the medical community continues to celebrate this professional holiday.
