May 15: Constituent Assembly Day (Lithuania)

Constituent Assembly Day is observed in Lithuania every May 15, commemorating the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly in 1920. This assembly was elected by popular vote to draft and adopt the constitution, which was completed in 1922. Aleksandras Stulginskis, who was elected chairman, effectively became the president of Lithuania. The assembly, which lasted two years, addressed significant issues such as drafting the constitution, signing a peace treaty with Soviet Russia, a border treaty with Latvia, and passing a law on land reform. It also facilitated Lithuania's membership in the League of Nations. The assembly resigned on October 6, 1922, having enacted approximately 150 laws that laid the groundwork for the nation's administrative, economic, social, and cultural future.
