Family Day is observed in Ukraine every May 15, celebrating the importance of immediate families in people's lives. Originally established by President Viktor Yanukovych in 2011 and initially celebrated on July 8, the holiday was moved to its current date by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in 2023 to align with the International Day of Families, recognized by the United Nations. The change aimed to emphasize the immediate family, as reflected in the name alteration from Den’ Rodyny to Den’ Sim’yi. The July date was chosen to coincide with the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity in Russia, which commemorates Saint Peter and Fevronia, patrons of marriage and family. However, the July celebration never gained significant acceptance in Ukrainian society. Following the 2022 Russian invasion, there was a push to eliminate Russian influences, leading to the reassessment of various holidays, including Family Day. The first celebration on the new date occurred in 2024, marking a significant shift in the cultural observance of family in Ukraine.
