Baltic Fleet Day is observed in Russia every May 18, commemorating the establishment of the Baltic Fleet by Peter the Great in 1703 during the Great Northern War. The fleet, which was initially based in Kronstadt, began with the acquisition of the 24-gun frigate Shtandart and grew to include 141 sail warships and numerous oar-propelled vessels by 1724. Today, the modern Baltic Fleet is headquartered in Kaliningrad, with main bases in Baltyisk and Kronstadt, and comprises 75 combat ships and 23 aviation units. The annual celebration features a naval parade, followed by performances by marines, and includes the laying of flowers at the memorial of Peter the Great by veterans, locals, visitors, and commanders.
