Battle of Las Piedras Day is observed in Uruguay every May 18, commemorating the pivotal battle fought in 1811 during the country's struggle for independence from Spain. This official working holiday is primarily recognized by schools and public officials. The battle, led by José Gervasio Artigas and involving an Uruguayan army of 1,000 men, resulted in a decisive victory for the revolutionaries and is considered a turning point in the conflict that also included Argentina and Paraguay. Following the battle, Artigas famously stated, “Cure the injured, mercy the vanquished,” reflecting a notable act of compassion towards Spanish prisoners and wounded soldiers. After this victory, only Colonia del Sacramento and Montevideo remained under royalist control, which were eventually captured in 1814. The day serves as a reminder of Uruguay's fight for independence and the leadership of Artigas, who later became a national hero.
