The Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Deportation of the Peoples of Crimea is observed in Ukraine every May 18 to honor the Russian Germans, Crimean Italians, Crimean Tatars, Armenians, Crimean Bulgarians, and Soviet Greeks who were deported from Crimea between 1941 and 1944. This remembrance day was established by the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea in 1994. The deportations, particularly of the Crimean Tatars, were carried out in several waves, with over 180,000 Crimean Tatars forcibly relocated to Soviet Central Asia from May 18 to May 20, 1944. The event is marked by solemn remembrance ceremonies held in Crimea and throughout Ukraine. In 1989, the Supreme Council of Crimea condemned the deportation as a crime, and it has since been recognized as genocide by Ukraine and a few other countries. Despite this acknowledgment, neither the Soviet Union nor the Russian Federation provided reparations to the affected families.
