May 18: Speech Pathologist Day (United States)

National Speech Pathologist Day, also known as National SLP Day, is observed in the United States every year on May 18. This professional holiday recognizes the vital role that speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play in treating communication, cognitive-communication, voice, and swallowing disorders. Established to highlight the contributions of SLPs to healthcare, the day has been celebrated since 2010. The field of speech-language pathology began to develop actively in the early 1920s in the U.S., largely due to the needs of soldiers returning from World War I who suffered from language difficulties. To practice as a speech pathologist in the U.S., one must obtain a master’s degree in speech-language pathology, complete clinical hours, and receive state licensure and national certification. SLPs work across various settings, including schools and hospitals, providing services to individuals of all ages. Additionally, some other countries, such as Russia, have their own observances dedicated to speech therapists.
