National Speech Pathologist Day, also known as National SLP Day, is observed in the United States every year on May 18. This professional holiday recognizes the vital role that speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play in treating communication, cognitive-communication, voice, and swallowing disorders. Established to highlight the contributions of SLPs to healthcare, the day has been celebrated since 2010. The field of speech-language pathology began to develop actively in the early 1920s in the U.S., largely due to the needs of soldiers returning from World War I who suffered from language difficulties. To practice as a speech pathologist in the U.S., one must obtain a master’s degree in speech-language pathology, complete clinical hours, and receive state licensure and national certification.
