National Mechanical Dry Eye Day, also known as National MDE Day, is observed worldwide every May 19 to educate the public about mechanical dry eye (MDE), a common age-related eye condition often misdiagnosed. The day was established in 2020 by BioTissue, a biotech company that focuses on regenerative wound healing using human amniotic membrane tissues. MDE, or conjunctivochalasis, occurs when excess folds of the conjunctiva disrupt the eye's lubrication, leading to symptoms such as dryness, irritation, and blurry vision. The condition primarily affects individuals aged 60 and older, with an estimated 98% prevalence in this age group. On this day, individuals are encouraged to schedule eye checkups, particularly those in the risk group, and to share information about MDE on social media using the hashtags #NationalMechanicalDryEyeDay and #NationalMDEDay.
