The Day of Madrid, also known as Fiesta de la Comunidad de Madrid, is observed in the Spanish autonomous community of Madrid every May 2. This public holiday commemorates the anniversary of the uprising against Napoleon’s troops on May 2, 1808, which escalated into the Peninsular War. The uprising began when residents protested against French General Joachim Murat's plan to move members of the royal family to Bayonne, leading to violent confrontations. In response to the protests, Murat ordered his troops to fire on the crowd, resulting in hundreds of deaths. The anniversary is marked with police and military events, street parties, and local celebrations throughout Madrid and surrounding areas, reflecting the spirit of resistance that the uprising inspired.
