Teachers' Day in Iran is observed every May 2, commemorating the martyrdom of Morteza Motahhari, a significant ideologist of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, who was assassinated on May 1, 1979. Initially, the day honored Abulhassan Khan'ali, a teacher shot dead on May 2, 1961, during a meeting in front of the National Consultative Assembly. After the Islamic Revolution, the focus shifted to Motahhari, who had a notable career as a cleric, lecturer, and politician, teaching philosophy at the University of Tehran for 22 years. He co-founded the Hosseiniyeh Ershad and the Combatant Clergy Association, emphasizing teaching over writing, with some of his lectures published posthumously. The day serves as a professional holiday to honor educators and their contributions to society.
