Sign Language Interpreter Day is observed in Ukraine every May 20, celebrating the vital role of sign language interpreters in facilitating communication between deaf and hearing individuals. Established in 2009 by the Ukrainian Society of the Deaf, this annual professional holiday honors interpreters who translate between signed and spoken languages within the country. The activity of sign language interpreters in Ukraine is coordinated by the Council of Sign Language Interpreters, based in Kyiv, which collaborates closely with the Ukrainian Society of the Deaf. Most interpreters undergo formal training lasting from 1 to 4 months and obtain a state certificate.
