National Spiritual Baptist Day is observed in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines every May 21. This public holiday commemorates the decriminalization of the Spiritual Baptist faith, a syncretic Afro-Caribbean religion that combines elements of Christianity with traditional African spiritual practices. The origins of this faith trace back to the 19th century, with influences from former American slaves known as Merikins, who brought their Baptist beliefs to the British West Indies. The Spiritual Baptists, often referred to as “Shouters” or “Shakers,” are known for their vibrant worship style that includes intense prayer, singing, and dancing. Despite facing prohibition from colonial authorities in the early 20th century, they continued to practice their faith in secret until the bans were lifted in the mid-20th century. In 2002, the day was officially recognized, and in 2024 it was designated as a public holiday, allowing for celebrations of their cultural and religious heritage.
