May 24: Commonwealth Day (Belize)

Commonwealth Day is observed in Belize every May 24, also known as Sovereign's Day. The holiday has its origins in the late 19th century when Queen Victoria was seen as a motherly figure representing the British Empire. Following her death in 1901, the Earl of Meath promoted a special day for children's training, leading to the establishment of Empire Day, which Belize, then known as British Honduras, celebrated. As British influence declined, Empire Day evolved into British Commonwealth Day in 1958 and eventually became Commonwealth Day in 1966. Belize, which gained independence in 1981 but remains a Commonwealth realm, celebrates this day with various cultural events, including horse races and cycling races. Schools and universities participate by raising the flag and reading the Queen's Day message, reflecting the holiday's historical significance and connection to the Commonwealth.
