National Tap Dance Day is observed on May 25 each year in the USA, celebrating tap dancing as an American art form. The holiday was established following a proposal by Congress on February 7, 1989, and was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush on November 8, 1989, coinciding with the birthday of influential tap dancer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson. Although it was officially celebrated only once upon its introduction, unofficial celebrations occur nationwide and in countries such as India, Australia, Japan, and Iceland. Activities typically include master classes, street dancing flash mobs, and concerts organized by schools and tap dancing studios. A popular routine associated with the day is the “Shim Sham Shimmy,” often referred to as tap dance's national anthem, which many studios teach to passers-by on this day.
