Special Operations Forces Day is observed in Ukraine every May 27, celebrating the bravery and heroism of the Special Operations Forces personnel during the Anti-Terrorist Operation and the Joint Forces Operation in the War in Donbass. Established by President Petro Poroshenko in 2016, the holiday originally fell on July 29, commemorating the sacrifice of a special ops group in 2014, but was moved to May 27 by President Volodymyr Zelensky to honor the liberation of Donetsk airport by special forces. The day highlights the important role of the Special Operations Forces in defending Ukraine and aims to develop national military traditions and promote patriotic education among the youth. The Special Operations Forces, established as a separate branch of the Armed Forces in 2016, engage in various tasks including intelligence gathering, counter-terrorism, and ensuring maritime security. Their motto, “I come at you!”, reflects their commitment to decisive action.
