World Dhole Day is observed worldwide every May 28, and it was launched in 2021 by the Dhole Conservation Fund to highlight the plight of the endangered dhole (Cuon alpinus), a canid native to regions including Bhutan, India, and Vietnam. The day aims to raise funds for conservation efforts and support groups dedicated to protecting this species, which faces threats such as habitat loss and competition from other predators. Dholes are social animals that communicate through whistles and have a unique appearance, often described as a blend of red fox and gray wolf features. With an estimated 2,500 adult dholes remaining in the wild, the day encourages individuals to learn about these animals, donate to conservation projects, and share information on social media using the hashtag #WorldDholeDay. Despite being protected in some areas, dholes lack sufficient public attention and captive breeding programs to bolster their population.
