National Elderly Day (Hari Lanjut Usia Nasional) is observed in Indonesia every May 29. This official observance aims to express gratitude to elderly individuals for their contributions to the country's development and to highlight the challenges they face, such as neglect and limited access to healthcare. Established by President Suharto in 1996, the date commemorates the first plenary meeting of the Investigating Committee for Preparatory Work for Independence, which was chaired by Dr. Radjiman Wediodiningrat, who was 66 at the time. Activities on this day include competitions, gymnastics classes, seminars, discussions on elderly welfare, and the distribution of aid packages, organized by local governments across the country. The Indonesian parliament adopted the Law on Elderly Welfare in 1998, defining the elderly as individuals aged 60 or older, and established the National Committee for the Elderly to coordinate efforts to improve their social welfare.
