May 30: King Prajadhipok Day (Thailand)

King Prajadhipok Day is observed in Thailand on May 30 each year, commemorating the death anniversary of King Prajadhipok, the seventh king of the Chakri dynasty. Established in 2002, this observance honors the legacy of King Prajadhipok, known for being the last absolute monarch and the first constitutional monarch of Siam. Although it is not a public holiday, the day is marked with an official ceremony. Prajadhipok, who was born on November 8, 1893, initially pursued a military career before unexpectedly ascending to the throne as King Rama VII at the age of 32 following the death of his elder brother, King Vajiravudh. His reign was characterized by efforts to transition Thailand towards a constitutional monarchy, culminating in the 1932 bloodless coup that established such a government. Prajadhipok abdicated in 1935 and spent the remainder of his life in England, where he passed away on May 30, 1941.
