Borobi Day is observed in Australia every May 31, celebrating the country's Indigenous languages and culture. The holiday was established to honor the legacy of Borobi, the blue koala mascot of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, designed by Aboriginal artist Chern’ee Sutton. The name "Borobi" comes from the Yugambeh language, meaning "koala." The inaugural celebration took place in 2019 during National Reconciliation Week, which aims to foster reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Activities on Borobi Day typically include language lessons, storytelling sessions, cultural performances, and the distribution of educational materials, encouraging communities and schools to learn local Indigenous words and acknowledge traditional custodians. The initiative is a collaboration between the Commonwealth Games organizers and the Yugambeh Museum Language & Heritage Research Centre.
