May 31: Scouts’ Day

Scouts’ Day in Vietnam is observed every May 31, commemorating the efforts to re-establish the Vietnamese Scouting movement, which began in 1993 when former Scout leaders gathered in Hanoi. The origins of Scouting in Vietnam trace back to the 1930s when the Vietnamese Scouting Association was founded by two teachers in Hanoi, with activities emphasizing athletics. The movement expanded throughout Vietnam, and the first Indochina Jamboree took place in 1941. However, the Scouting movement faced challenges during and after World War II, leading to its decline due to political changes and wars, particularly the partition of Vietnam and the Vietnam War. Despite these setbacks, Vietnamese Scouts continued to form troops in refugee camps and abroad. In 2018, Pathfinder Scouts Vietnam was established in southern Vietnam, and it was re-admitted into the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 2019, marking a resurgence of Scouting in the country.
