May 4: Firefighter’s Day

Firefighter's Day (Dzień Strażaka) is observed in Poland every May 4, coinciding with International Firefighters' Day, which was established in 1999 to honor five firefighters who died in a bush fire in Australia. The date is significant as it also marks the feast day of Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters and Poland, whose relics were sent to Krakow in 1184. Officially recognized by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland in 2002, Firefighter's Day celebrates the contributions of both state and volunteer fire brigades. On this day, distinguished firefighters receive awards for their dedicated service, and friendly competitions are held between fire units from different cities. While it is a professional holiday, it is not a day off unless it falls on a weekend.
