Saint Florian Day is observed in Upper Austria on May 4 each year. This holiday honors Saint Florian, a Roman soldier who became a Christian martyr during the Diocletianic Persecution. He is recognized for his efforts to protect Christians and was ultimately executed for refusing to sacrifice to Roman gods. The town of Sankt Florian, named in his honor, is located near the Augustinian monastery where his body was buried. Saint Florian is the patron saint of firefighters, chimney sweeps, and soapmakers, and he is also venerated in Poland due to the transfer of some of his relics to Krakow in the 12th century. On this day, government workers and school students in Upper Austria typically have the day off to celebrate.
