May 4: Youth Day in China / Literary Day (China and Taiwan)

Youth Day in China and Literary Day in Taiwan are observed every May 4. Youth Day commemorates the May Fourth Movement, which began in Beijing in 1919 as a response to the Chinese government's weak handling of the Treaty of Versailles. This movement not only sparked widespread protests but also fostered a surge in Chinese nationalism and was closely linked to the New Culture Movement, advocating for a shift towards a more western-oriented culture. In 1949, May 4 was officially designated as Youth Day in China to honor the students involved in the demonstrations. In Taiwan, the celebration originally coincided with Youth Day but was moved to March 29 in 1954 to commemorate the Second Guangzhou uprising, and it was renamed Literary Day. While Youth Day is a public holiday in China, Literary Day is not observed as such in Taiwan.
