Press Day, also known as Printing Day, is observed in Belarus on May 5 every year. This professional holiday celebrates employees of print media, although many in the independent media community view it differently due to the restrictive environment they operate in. The holiday was officially established by President Alexander Lukashenko in 1996, commemorating the publication of the newspaper Pravda in 1912. Major print media in Belarus includes state-owned newspapers like Zviazda, the only Belarusian-language daily, and SB. Belarus Segodnya, often referred to as a propaganda outlet. Additionally, there are independent newspapers such as Novy Chas and Nasha Niva, but they face significant challenges, including economic discrimination and harassment. Despite the holiday's recognition, many independent journalists do not consider it a celebration due to ongoing repression of free speech in the country.
