The Feast of Saint George, known as al-Khader in Palestinian Arabic, is observed on May 6 in Palestine, coinciding with the celebration by Eastern Orthodox Churches that follow the Julian calendar. This feast is significant for both Christians and Muslims in the region, as they identify Saint George with al-Khidr, a revered figure in the Quran. The main celebration takes place in the town of al-Khader, near Bethlehem, where the Eastern Orthodox Monastery of Saint George is located, believed to be the site of the saint's imprisonment. Celebrations begin on the eve of the holiday, with Christian pilgrims participating in a procession to the monastery, while Muslims welcome them by guarding the entrance. Customs include making promises, trading loaves of bread, and picnicking in the olive grove surrounding the church. Additionally, animal sacrifices are performed, reflecting the legend of Saint George slaying a dragon, with Muslims offering two types of sacrifices during the feast. The celebration of Saint George is also recognized in other Middle Eastern countries such as Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan.
