Parents' Day is observed in South Korea every May 8. Unlike Children's Day, it is not a public holiday but is widely celebrated throughout the country. This holiday originated in the 1930s when some Christian communities began celebrating Mother's Day, which was later combined with Confucian traditions. In 1973, Mother's Day was renamed Parents' Day to honor both mothers and fathers. On this day, children typically give their parents carnations, a flower associated with the celebration. Although it is not a non-working holiday, the Ministry of Health and Welfare organizes various public events to mark the occasion. The holiday emphasizes the deep respect and reverence for parents that is ingrained in traditional Korean culture, which remains strong despite the rapid industrialization and urbanization of the country.
