In Iran, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the 20th day of the Islamic month Jumada al-Thani. This day honors the birth of Fatimah, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, recognizing her as a role model for Muslim women and the embodiment of motherhood. The holiday was first established in 1960 during the Pahlavi era and was originally observed on December 16 to commemorate the founding of the Institute for Women Protection, an initiative supported by Queen Farah Pahlavi. After the Islamic Revolution in 1979, the date was moved to Jumada al-Thani, replacing the previous celebrations of both International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day. In Shia Islam, Fatimah is highly respected as sinless and an exemplar for women, being the mother of the second and third Imams, Hasan and Hussein. Despite this, the Iranian government has been criticized for using Mother’s Day to reinforce patriarchal ideals and to marginalize feminist movements.
