National Day, or Staatsfeiertag, is observed in Liechtenstein on August 15 every year. Established in 1940, the holiday coincides with the Catholic celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, reflecting the country’s predominantly Roman Catholic heritage. Additionally, this date is significant as it is the day before the birthday of the reigning Prince Franz Joseph II. Celebrations include an official ceremony in front of Vaduz Castle, cultural events, a public fair, festive processions, a firework display, and a large party in the center of Vaduz. Although Liechtenstein became an independent state in 1866, National Day does not commemorate this independence but rather celebrates the cultural and historical significance of the date.
