Classics Day (Koten no Hi) is observed in Japan every November 1 to celebrate the country's rich cultural heritage and promote classical works. The day was established following the 1000th anniversary of "The Tale of Genji," a seminal work of Japanese literature written by Murasaki Shikibu during the Heian period. The inaugural celebration took place in 2008, and it was officially recognized by the Act on Classics Day in 2012. The observance honors various forms of classical culture, including literature, music, fine arts, traditional performing arts, and lifestyle arts such as ikebana and calligraphy. It also acknowledges foreign cultural products that have influenced Japanese culture, such as Kanshi poetry and classical music. The celebration is coordinated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and marks the beginning of the annual Education and Culture Week, which includes Culture Day on November 3.
