Self-Defense Forces Commemoration Day is observed in Japan every November 1. Established in 1966, this day honors the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF), which were officially formed on July 1, 1954. The celebration was moved to November 1 to avoid the typhoon season, which can hinder proper festivities. While it is not a public holiday, a parade honoring the SDF typically occurs during the last week of October, held every three years. The JSDF comprises three branches: the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, and Japan Air Self-Defense Force, with approximately 260,000 active personnel. The Prime Minister serves as the commander-in-chief of the SDF, and in 2013, the National Security Council was established to reform the JSDF.
